Coastal waters and communities connected by ocean heritage

Global Ocean Heritage

Programme overview

Ocean heritage is lived on shore as well as underwater.

Global Ocean Heritage / MUCH connects maritime, underwater, coastal and water-related heritage with memory, environment, decolonisation, local knowledge and community-based practice.

Its scope includes ports, coastal settlements, rivers, maritime routes, oral histories, sacred waters, ecological knowledge, shipwrecks and submerged sites. This wider frame helps technical heritage practice respond to the people and relationships that give sites meaning.

“Better practice begins by listening to what is possible, useful and just in a particular place.”

Programme aims

  • Connect specialist knowledge to lived coastal and maritime heritage.
  • Make space for local experience within international frameworks.
  • Develop practical, context-sensitive methods and case studies.
  • Share outcomes through HeritageLab, seminars and EduHub resources.
