People gathered beneath the branches of an ancient tree

TreeRouted

Project story

Trees carry more than rings.

TreeRouted explores trees as living archives of heritage. Through personal videos recorded around the world, the project links family memory, migration, trade routes, diaspora, conflict, care, environmental change and everyday life.

Users will be able to explore stories by tree type—such as mango or olive—or through themes including love, war and climate change. Together, the stories form a living archive that is locally rooted and globally connected.

“Tree” is one of the first words we learn in any language, because trees carry the story of our own roots.

What the project creates

  • Community-led stories and personal videos rooted in particular trees.
  • Film, photography and digital narratives for a shared public platform.
  • Connections between ecological knowledge, migration, memory and cultural heritage.
  • Learning resources for schools, universities and community groups.

Field method

Begin with one tree.

Who remembers it? What has changed around it? Which routes, relationships and practices meet beneath its branches?

Filming continued in 2025 as new network partners joined. The next phase edits stories collected over the past two years and develops new contributions around communities with active Co-labs.
